Purpose of this blog

This is my first attempt at a blog. I have never been much of a recreational writer but I feel that I have to document my transformation from couch potato to athlete.
I decided a few months ago, at age 48, I decided that I'm still not too old to be involved in some of my area cycling events. I live in western North Carolina, specifically the city of Lenoir. We have an annual cycling event here called the Bridge-to-Bridge. It is touted as 100mi of pure hill.
I have been about 40 to 50lbs. overweight for a long time. It occured to me that it would be interesting to set a weightloss goal for myself and then shoot toward making it happen. Something that I have always thought of doing was entering the B2B Challenge. This is the year that I will finally do it.
There are some challenges that I have to overcome already. First, I don't currently own a road bike. I do have a mountain bike that I have been riding since I came up with this plan back in September of last year, and am currently working on the road bike. Secondly, I feel that I'm too heavy to ride a road bike. I weigh 230lbs. right now and would like to be down to under 200 by May. The first race of my season, and my life, will be the Ride Around Wilkes May 5th. It is a metric centery (62mi.)and will be a good test of my fitness at that time. There will be a few hills in the RAW but not to the extent that B2B will have.
My wife and I have also joined the local gym, the Quest for Life. We enjoy the fitness classes there. The instructors are very good and I find that I get a better workout that if I just work on my own. I still get a little sore after every class as we do a little different workout in every class.
Hopefully this blog will not only inspire me to keep going, but will also inspire someone else into actively changing their life in some way. I will try to blog something every few days and log my weight at that time. Maybe give a few detailed accounts of my workout regime.
